Implementing CallidusCloud Monaco at LANDesk

LANDesk Software is a global leader in systems lifecycle management, endpoint security and IT service management. Since early 2012, it has been using CallidusCloud’s Monaco solution for its 250+ strong salesforce. In June 2012, LANDesk acquired – Wavelink, a leader in device management and wireless infrastructure management.

Wavelink was using an Excel based home grown tool to manage sales compensation for its 100+ strong salesforce. This entailed multiple and personalized worksheets for each payee, updated every month. The entire process required significant resources and was still highly error prone.

Soon after the merger was completed, with the goal of streamlining business processes and optimize the resources, LANDesk management team decided to get Wavelink on the CallidusCloud platform.

Implementing IBM ICM at Harmonics Inc

In 2011, Harmonic Inc, decided to deploy IBM ICM (then Varicent) to automate commission operations. They engaged one of the IBM’s certified partner for the initial implementation. The system went live, with some delays, but then business needs changed significantly. The system, as implemented, was unable to meet the needs. Having experienced the quality of work from this partner, Harmonic released an RFP, and this time decided to engage Spectrum to reimplement the system.

Spectrum took on the re implementation project in 2013, and completed the project within 4 months.

Implementing IBM Cognos ICM at Varian

Varian Medical Systems is a leading silicon-valley firm in the field of medical devices. A decision was made in 2010 to evaluate and transform the commission plans. This endeavor revealed to stakeholders that the spreadsheet based system used to calculate these plans didn’t work well, and would be a challenge to update to support new plans. Which is something the sales force knew very well, as they were used to seeing and reporting errors in their pay.
Based predominately in Excel workbooks with complex formulas, multiple worksheets for each of the 70+ payees, hundreds of manual entries, and updates to the files every quarter, errors were the norm rather than the exception, and payees expected and reported them each quarter. This process required two weeks of work for four employees dedicated to manually updating data, checking and updating formulas, importing data, and creating manual reports for each payee.

This resulted in hundreds of hours each quarter spent on a manual system that ultimately created more work in correcting its errors that were only detected after the payees received their quarterly payments.

Varian picked IBM’s Cognos ICM software, then known as Varicent, to replace the manual spreadsheets. The initial implementation in 2011 ran i to several hurdles and the project was put on hold, to be resumed later in 2012.

Managing Sales commissions and Disputes at T-Mobile

T-Mobile US, Inc., provides mobile communications services in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It offers its services and products via a dealer network and its own retail stores. With approximately 275 Master Dealers, 15,000 Agents, and 25,000 employees on incentive compensation plans, T-Mobile has a complex and massive commission operation. In 2010, T-Mobile had decided to replace its in-house legacy commissions platform with Varicent, which is now acquired by IBM.

Managing the commission operations for 3 distinct types of Payees—Dealers, Agents, Employees—in an ever-evolving industry poses a huge operational challenge for both IT and Commission Operations. The incentive landscape has inherent challenges as new plan components are rolled out quarterly to keep up with the competition. SPIFFs and KSOs are rolled out and pulled back sometimes weekly. Delays in calculating the commission amount and publishing the commission statements were a risk to T-Mobile’s ability to attract and retain sales talent. Both the Commission Operations team and IT were under tremendous pressure to react fast, pay correctly and quickly.
